Would a foreman holding a Nebosh National General Cert (not construction) still need to go on a SMSTS course or does the Nebosh supersede the SMSTS ?

Ask the Client/ Principal contractor on site, as they all have their own views. All our PM's have SMSTS, and foremen have SSSTS. I had a guy who has an IOSH certification turned away from site as he didnt have a CSCS card last week, cause the PC just wanted CSCS. And also my NPORS plant trained operatives have now to be retained to CPCS as the PC wont accept NPORS. SO in short ask the Client/ PC what their requirements are.

Paul, If the PC is a member of the UKCG then use a search engine and look up UKCG Training Standards - they were amended earleir this year and the requirements for those who manage and put others to work are all listed. If they are not part of the UKCG I would suggest as previous poster and ask. Regards Clive

Paul as previous posters say ask the PC.. We have Appointed Persons Lifting Operations 4 day CITB course with qualification on a CSCS card they are not allowed to supervise a Lifting Operation on some UKCG without SSSTS cards sites. But a SSSTS Carpenter can supervise the lift because he has a card? They are a law unto their selves and they are the only ones who can answer your query as they all seem to have different standards. Which in itself is strange as they are all supposed to have signed up to one system/standard. Regards and Happy hunting Alex

You'll find most principle contractors in the construction industry require both, and to undertake there own site specific induction, and there group safety initiatives, and there permit to work process, and there restricted entry procedure, and there own train the trainer requirement.......................theres a pattern here i think.

Paul, there is no legal requirement to hold either. This is down to your internal requirements or Client stipulation. The SMSTS is of course of more direct relevant to on-site supervision. I suggest that the NEBOSH general cert. doesn't cover the content of SMSTS.

The SMSTS is the course for Construction Site Management, not supervision and gives far more infromation regarding Construction site management, not just H&S. Even if you had NEBOSH Construction ( H&S specific) then the SMSTS is still a very valuable course to attend.
