Only if an automatic release is fitted to the door, otherwise they are kept shut.

Pleased about the fine and verdict.
When I started with a previous employer it was common practice for the filthy weed abusers to loiter outside the fire exits permeating the air with their filth, wedging the doors open and then forgetting to shut them properly.
I had all the signs changed to read "Emergency Exit Only" and got the MD to agree that the incorrect use of such exits would result in disciplinary action. I don't know why but emergency exits seem to be better maintained. IMHO.

Clive,
are you admitting that you used " 'elf 'n' safety " as an excuse to apply your own prejudices against your staff?
I hope not
No I don't smoke but....

The link provided it states “The inspection also revealed escape routes that were obstructed, fire exit doors wedged open and combustible items obstructing fire doors”. What exactly is meant by the term “fire exit doors” granted this seems to refer to final exit doors; but I have seen (in Fire RA’s) and also heard the following terms used: - Fire door….Usually refers to internal doors. - Emergency exit doors…. Escape to exit building or possibly safe haven? - Emergency door…..? - Final emergency exit door….Escape to exit building or possibly safe haven. Also if it was a final exit door, then did this lead out onto a restricted final escape route, or possibly beneath an external escape stair case? If so then the RA should have required that it was not left wedged open; but if this was not the case then where does the law state that a final emergency exit door must not be wedged open? (No reference in the RRFSO that I could find).

Dont get this the fine was for chaining and locking fire exits when persons were in the store , preventing a safe exit in the event of an emergency it was not for wedging doors which would have allowed an escape or am i reading the articles wrong

Also, for clarification: http://www.bbc.co.uk/new...gland-berkshire-18345764 Rather underlines the point that the two charges were for locked/ chained fire doors. Nothing to do with vitriol against smokers.
