Hello All, I am looking for some career advice, I have been working in H&S for 5 years now within manufacturing and have recently completed the Nebosh Fire Safety and Risk Management certificate. I absolutely enjoyed this course, and currently head up the risk assessments team for Fire safety and H&S in my workplace. This is defiantly the career path I now want to take. Can anyone advice me on what course of action I now need to take to gain experience and what qualification I should look at doing next. currently I work in a Lab as technician and spend about 50% of my time carrying out health and safety duties, obviously I want to move into health and safety full time, but there is not enough scope for this in my current employment any advice ?? Many thanks in advance.

If you want to be a pure fire risk assessment consultant then in my opinion you're gonna need to be a fire safety engineer or equivalent. Hi tech stuff at degree level. If just want to incorporate FRA's for lower risk premises into general H&S then keep doing what you're doing and get expereince.

Hi Clairel, Yes I think that is the way I want to go although I am not a fire safety engineer. I fully understand I will need to keep doing what I am doing as experience counts for a lot with with future employers these days. I am very interested in a degree in this field, if any one can advise me on a part time learning with in the midlands area as I will have to do it around my current employment. Psycho, Thank you for your comment, if I was about 20 years younger then I would have given some serious thought to this as a career.:)

You only listed the fire certificate. Have you got your NGC? If not and you did the full monty on the NFC then, ding dang doo, all that is needed is the NGC2 and you have another level 3 qualification. After that I would start thinking about Diplomas, subject of course to funding. The Environmental Certificate is also worth a gander. I know of a good provider in the Midlands.

Hi Betta, Yes I have my Nebosh General, and are currently saving for my level 3 Environmental as you suggested. After that I want to look into diploma's or equivalent for fire safety. You said you know of a good provide in the midlands for part time learning, if you could point me in the right direction that would be fantastic. Thank you for you advice.

I have recently done the Module 1 of the Fire Managers course. http://www.vulcanfiretra...uk/course_intro_Page.php You will only have to do Mod 1 as you have the NEBOSH- this will get you a Technician member of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers, should you wish to. I would recommend this course. Only connection with this company is that of a satisfied customer. Andy
