Today I'm spending my Saturday going through a 100 odd page project risk management plan with a fine toothed comb, and making sure that any abbreviations used in the document are included in the list of abbreviations. It's the modern day equivalent of Chinese water torture and is unlikely to directly save anyones life, but unfortunatey it has to be done. Does anyone else have any tedious work tasks that they really don't like doing, but have to do anyway? ........

Can't you use spell check ?. If you have previously added them to your dictionary temporarily take them out. I assume you are referring to non standard abbreviations ( technical or H&S related etc not things like "etc")

Chris they're technical/maritime abbreviations and its a document for the Norwegian sector so part of it is in English and part of it is in Norwegian. The spell checker goes mental so there is no easy way of doing it, hence it being a tedious task. I was wondering if any other IOSH members had any work duties that drive them to distraction

Assuming its a normal Word document. If you use the 'Find' and 'Replace' option, this job can be done fairly quickly. If you select each abbreviation from the Glossary / List of Abbreviations, then Find & Replace through your document. I have to do this task quite often, also English & Norwegian.

The problem I have is that a lot of the abbreviations in the main text are not listed in the Glossary, and many of them dont give a meaning so I have to look them up. It's based on a template that hasn't been updated for a while. I will persist with it and see if I can find an easier way. I am putting together a master list of abbrebviations, that are applicable to marine ops in Norwegian waters, as I go along to hopefully make this easier in the future. JJ, I can send you a copy of it if you would find it useful. Chris and JJ thank you for your suggestions.

No problem. SOunds like the original document author was a bit ill disciplined writing the document. Look forward to your abbviations list Personally I find it difficult translating English to Smoggytown talk on Teesside.
