Just interested to learn whether other companies have log books or checklists for their staff to complete for company vehicles ie water, oil, tyre pressure etc. If so, what frequency do expect these to be completed? Thanks for you comments in advance.

In my case, the transport manager deals with company vehicles (cars/ vans/ mini buses), and I know he has a weekly check sheet

Drivers have daily check sheets to complete before using the vehicle each day. Vehicles are then subject to other inspections and services which are managed by our garage. If you are operating under an O licence your designated fleet manager should be aware of this.

My concern with checklists is they just become another bit of paper safety which has to be monitored, plus there is nothing to say that vehicle drivers just put a row of ticks down. Personally, I prefer a more proactive system, such as spot checks on vehicles.

Ray I agree and our supervisors regularly stop vehicles leaving the yard and run through the checklist with them confirming all is correct. However you do need the daily check sheet as part of your audit trail, especially if your vehicle is involved in an accident and an investigation follows either by the police, HSE or your insurers.

Are you referring to commercial vehicles or cars? And are those commercial vehicles based at a depot when not in use? You would expect more control for commercial vehicles than cars I would think. FWIW we have a company car fleet of about 500 cars, based throughout the UK. All drivers are instructed to carry out certain daily / weekly checks during car handover however there is no checklist for this, as it would be impossible to monitor, and could easily be open to abuse. I suspect the reality is that these checks don’t occur at the frequency they should, but do we all check these things daily in our own cars? (I gave up checking oil / water after realising than a modern car really doesn’t go wrong too often! 2 years with the car and I still have never had to top anything up!) If we had commercial vehicles on our fleet then it would be entirely different I suspect.

Jake, essentially I am looking at company vehicles (vans - large and small) but also company cars.

There is a ROSPA publication MS271, "Driving for work" which suggests weekly checks and pre drive checks. It's on page 6 if you count the cover as page 1. http://www.rospa.com/roa...fety/info/ownvehicle.pdf
