Hi,my background is in the Landbased Industries but I'm looking for a change. I've got my Gen Cert , PTLLS , A 1 , V 1, am an assessor for C & G and some lesser certs e.g( PASMA, C/balance FLT ). I'm trying to get into the Offshore sector or the Middle East ( yes, chasing the money ! ). I'm looking for some advice on my next step, I will do my Survival/MIST etc but will also add more to increase my attractability to employers, but what more ?
Should I do my slinger - rigger 1/2, a HS2 course, Fire, NEBOSH Int Oil & Gas?......Just dont know best way to go, so all and any advice would be gatefully accepted.___Kenny

Safetrain,

I would ask what level you are pitching this at? And what is your current/offshore experience? Gaining access to the Offshore sector in the Middle East is quite simply no walk in the park. I currently work for an EPC contractor who works with the ADNOC group of companies in Abu Dabi such as ADMA, ADGAS, GASCO etc etc. They are very qualification focused and much of the time for Engineer/Managerial positions look for a degree level qualification in a related subject whether Elec/Mech/Chem Engineering or HSE related.

My advice would be to aim at the many EPC/EPCM companies out here first to get a foot in the door and see where it leads you.

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply Darren and the advice, I am aiming at a foot-in level. In my short time with a recognised entry level H&S qualification, and my short time on this IOSH forum, I have realised that I am up against more attractive candidates than myself, and it is indeed, no walk in the park. I'm at the beginning of my journey with this career choice and just trying to figure out what is the more appreciated short course to take.

Hi

I had the same problem as you are having, as a chain of events I lost my job on the 11th June and decided to go for it, I did my BOSIET and MIST in one week (TEESSIDE CHEAPEST), then spent a week on Linkedin and I'm as we speak on my 1st night shift offshore.

It is only a 4 month contract but its a foot in the door, the best advice I can give is bite the bullet and pay for the survival courses, be proactive and connect with people on linkedin be polite ask them for advice or could they pass your CV, but make the job search an obsession all day every day. Contacting the companies is a good idea back I never got passed many of the switch boards.

Make contact with people be cheeky but polite and it works jobs don't find you, ill help if I can

Hi Mate
As Stevie W said, go do the BOSIET and MIST. If you want to add to that do your Banksman Slinger as well, but m ost of the training providers have rolled this into one called 'Greenhand' course. I work for drilling contractor and there are openings in the business right now. with the quals and experience you have, and the Greenhand should put you in a good place. Be prepared to work via agencies first as this is the usual route for a start as a Roustabout. Once you get your first couple of trips offshore for an agency, you should soon pick up a permanent rotation. (Remember however, 'permanent' means something different offshore than it does onshore, unless you get an operator position). Any other info then pm me, otherwise, good luck

Cheers Nick & Steve, well I've done the greenhand stuff
