Dear all

I'm after some advice on the frequency/type of maintenance/testing for evacuation chairs which will be rarely used (3 times a year max) but in public areas within a school.

I know that they are Class 1 medical devices and hence don't want to miss a trick. Currently not sure if we want to go down the route of buying servicing from the provider as our budget holder is having minor kittens.....we do have a maintenance dept who are very good, but not sure if there are certain items or parts of them which would require a very specific competency, and hence would be a non-starter for in-house maintenance and testing (in line with PUWER)

Hi

What type of evacuation chair ore they? If they are the stair descending type they are more complex and failure of a component will have more serious consequences.

How about asking the manufacturer what they recommend, and details of what the checks/maintenance will include, and how much it will cost.

That way you have the information you need to make a decision on what you need to do and who should be doing it.

I have, in the past, had two different suppliers of friction ski chairs. One insisted that they must inspect the chairs, but failed to honour the contract. The other said in-house maintenance could inspect them.

Many thanks Ian - they are all stair decending chairs to move a wheelchair bound person down a flight or more of stairs in various buildings (lots of different step nosings and hence 2 different types of belts required) They have already quoted an amount for each chair, but because of the number of chairs we need, the amount is sizeable. I will go back to them to check, but suspect that they will say that it has to be them!

If you have competent people in the business, I don't see any reason they could not maintain the chairs.

Hi

I can confirm what Motorhead has said. Evacusafe told me it was OK to check in house.

Whilst their chairs are different to others, for example Paraid's chair, the principal is the same.
