I am reviewing our current health and safety induction process and material for 1,000 + staff and volunteers. Has anyone got any information or hints and tips they are willing to share on what has worked well.

Get statistics from the HSE website accompanied by pictures from Websites to make things like "falls from working at height" stand out with details of Fatalities and major injuries. If you can get the information to hit home then you have won half the battle.

I try and make the new employees relax and join in with telling me about their previous history regarding unsafe practices and maybe they will tell you some good practices that could help you also.

As you have a lot of employees a bespoke film may work well. I've been impressed with what small, specialist film companies can do. It helps that staff can recognise the work environment as their own and you can provide a consistent, targeted message. You can make films available on the web or via CD.
As with most training/briefings it'll be worth having some sort of quiz at the end
