Hi folks,

I've been a Affiliate Iosh Member now for just over 3 years, I have ben in the Oil and Gas Industry in a Safety capacity now for approximately 5 years working steady offshore now for 3 of those years.

I've obtained the basic NEBOSH General Certificate along with a BA in Busness Studies and I'm looking for any advice with what would be the best next steps to take with regards to my career development.

I've looked into an MSc in Health, Safety and Risk Management and I'm also keen to move up a level with my Iosh Membership, I thought about joining the mentoring scheme available through Iosh?

Hope someone can assist and I welcome all your thoughts.

Thanks
Andy

Ask yourself where you want to be in 3, 5 ,and 10 years time?

Strathclyde have a good reputation for an MSc, could be worth having a discussion with them on access to that. Not sure if the Certificate plus BA would be a strong enough base to jump from, maybe do it in stages getting the Diploma first, then MSc??

Your experience plus Certificate should be enough to move on to 'Tech' level already. Diploma would be gateway to 'Grad' and with IPD onwards to CMIOSH and beyond.

Have a look around this site to see what the levels are for each grade and ask the membership department - they are busy but always willing to help.

Are you able to get to local meetings? Networking in an area can give leads and the meetings also normally have an element of CPD.

Good luck with whatever you go for,

Rgds,
S

SNS has given good advice, if you have not started your CPD I would start it now, I know you don't have to but it shows that you want to develop.
Contact IOSH CPD team (fiona.gelling@iosh.co.uk 44 (0)116 257 3168 is one card I have but may be out of date). They will give you advice and tell you if you can use any of your previous 5 years H&S experience for your CPD.

Why have you not got Tech IOSH ?
You seem to fit the criteria.

I'd try to grow within you own organisation.

Good Advice from SNS.
I was in exactly the same position as you about 5 years ago.
The only other thing I would add as a consideration is take a look the NVQ5.
You can skip it if you are heading down the diploma route anyway but the value I got from it was tremendous. (I used a company call BCS to administer mine)
One final comment. Dont be under any illusion the Strathclyde Post Grad Diploma it is intense. It really does take over your life and you need to be prepared for the amount of time it takes.
Hope this helps
