Hi,
I am looking for some help, does anyone have a template for a good covering letter that I could use to get me stared. I am struggling to find the right words. I work in a Quality control laboratory but carry some health and safety responsibilities within the facility that I work in. We do not have a health and safety department, as it is managed external, so there is no future for me as I want a full time roll in H&S.

Hi,
I assume you are applying for a new position which involves OH&S as the primary area of responsibility? If that's the case, the cover letter is your opportunity to market your knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) such that they will want to interview you. Connect what you have done with what they want-but don't be dishonest in your claims. Few prospective candidates have everything an employer is looking for. Pull out the key elements of your KSA's and present them in a way that tells the reader that you are someone they want to talk to. It isn't difficult to write a successful cover letter. It isn't your life story, and it isn't a distillation of your C.V. either. Two paragraphs maximum. You want it read, then put in the pile that gets the phone calls-not the other pile....

As Argyll stated, wants to be brief.
I normally have an introductory paragraph (a take from my own personal statement on my CV) then a breif para of key skills with some bullet points.
Remember it will need tweaking dependant on the positions you apply for, i.e. certain key skills promoted above others dependant on role requirements.
