Three of our engineers have just completed IPAC training for high level work. On the course they were issued with a harness and were shown how to use it etc. They have been told that they now need to complete a 1/2 day 'harness-specific' course - is this the right thing to do or are the original training company just trying to sell us another course?

It begs the question how good was the original training if they then need to take another course. It sounds like the training company are chancers and just trying to sell you another course. Your engineers just need to be competent to carry out the work at height. Make sure you carry out a risk assessment etc for the work at height to make sure you have all the bases covered, and maybe have a practice session at ground level, making sure it is fitted correctly, finding suitable anchor points, remaining clipped on when moving around etc.

You will also have to have a competent person compile a detailed inspection regime for the harnesses INDG 367 covers it in detail. I did the harness course and the training provider was not that good - just reading verbatim from a handout. I could have done better myself but I deemed myself not competent and so thought I would get a third party in.

For the harness specific training were the company aiming at rescue training also?? I have had attended training courses involving harnesses and they only tell you how to put them on, nothing about rescue from a harness, perhaps thats where the company is coming from.
