Afternoon All,
I am seeking clarity on an issue,possibly from those of you in an FM role or similar. I am a generalist, being Chartered, I consider myself to be reasonably competent in my role and therefore know when to seek advice, so please, please don't let this topic descend into a series of arguments!
I need clarity on the sorts of scenarios where you would expect to see an Authorising Engineer and Appointed Person being formally in place for LV and HV systems. Would you for example expect the AE role to be a "central" position with an AP appointed at each site? Or, would you expect to see both roles in place at each site?
I know its like asking how long is a piece of string, but just a general pointer would be gratefully received.
My take on it is the AE would be a corporate, central role, with a roving AP, within an FM company that services a number of client sites.

In my last company we had 2 AE who were based in the head office, they visited sites regularly, and carried out annual audits and inspections of permit folders.
I was a LV Senior Authorised Person, and had a number of sites, which had a number of electrical contractors working there.
I was the only one allowed under our electrical safety rules to do isolations and issue permits.
Its amazing the number of contractors who dont know how to safely isolate a circuit and prove dead!

I agree with Tony regarding the number of contractors (Electricians) who have no idea on the correct way to prove dead.
Teaching C&G 2391 from time to time (as I do) you would not believe the up hill struggle I have convincing them that they have been wrong for years!
Thank god for the Hills and long walks Mr Wainwright!

In summary, I think I'm content, so long as the AE and AP roles remain "central" and the local arrangements are such that these people are identified, appointed formally, and systems exist (perhaps within permit) that they can be drawn upon for local work.
Agree Zimmy, good old AW, I'm suffering from a bit of hill need at the mo! The poor weather putting me off a bit if I'm honest!
