Times are tough and opportunities are few. You just have to keep batting on and gain experience perhaps in A charity organisation, or a local; church . Maybe also consider training in a specialism, a certain area where there may be more opportunities such as oil and gas or maybe training in behavioral safety.

The certificate is a good grounding but commonplace qualification nowadays and employers are getting very picky in what they require and its usually CMIOSH, but you never know whats around the corner.

As SBH states, it is very competitive in the workplace for positions and I know have people, with respect, who have more qualifications in H&S and experience who cannot make it.

I think right time and right place comes to mind and you have to just keep trying and putting your CV forward to people for vacancies.

Speak to companies and agencies and ask for feedback on your CV and try and strengthen these areas. If they are areas you believe you are skilled at then review your CV and see if you have shown this clearly.

Perseverance is the key, best of luck!

Hi Imrie,

I've just passed my general certificate, too, and am also looking for opportunities in the health and safety sector.

As you've found, everywhere wants experience, but no-one will give you a job to get experience - it's a classic 'catch 22' situation.

My approach is to rely more on my main work experience, but use my h&s qualification as a (hopefully big) selling point to help me get a job with potential. With a bit of luck, once I have my feet under the table, I'll be able to try to gravitate into a h&s role.

Anyway, you're not alone - don't give up and you'll get where you want to be.

Best of luck.

The job market is slow, and its not getting any better, I work in Manufacturing, and we are under threat of loosing our jobs, as we are the main employer for the area, and employ 180 staff, I have applied to all the agencies who advertise on the net, and sent my C.V. Off to them, but I do not get any feedback or replies

Completely agree with this statement, taking a non-H&S role but then actively getting involved in the company health and safety is the route I took, that and you just need a little bit of luck to be in the right place at the right time!
I recently applied for a process operator role, but because of my interest and enthusiasm in H&S they offered me the Health, Safety and Env Officer role instead, and are putting me through NEBOSH (I only have NGC1 and NGC2 myself) and WAMITAB. Just keep plugging at it and eventually the right role will find you!

I took the NGC back in the 90s, i took it because the company I was working for at the time did a huge volume of work for (English China Clay ECC) now Imerys Minerals and (Blue Circle Cement) now Lafarge Cement both in the 'extracative minerals' fields. I was volunteered rather than a volunteer! but soon grew to get a buzz out of H&S (I know I'm sad!!).

I spent a decade with that company, when I was with them there were 2 x deaths (not employees of my company) but both construction related and both at sites where we were incumbent. This pricked my concience further.

I started writing letters looking for a sponsor through the NEBOSH Dip. some months later I got a call from a large national M&E contracting company and after attendence at an interview was offered a job as a regional H&S Manager, I am also ex Royal Navy, being an ex serviceman in the H&S industry is very helpful! ALL of the H&S department bar 1 were (and still are) ex military.

It took me 18months to get through the NEBOSH Dip. BUT I am looking around yeat again for a new opportunity and I can assure anyone currently looking that even with lots of competence, qualification and experience it is a difficult world out there for H&S practitioners at present.

I also have just the NGC NEBOSH in OH&S, and I am looking for a job...
I have seen some 'H&S administrator' jobs online. Although 'admin' sounds rubbish, when I read the job description, there was actually some decent stuff to get involved in. It was also only part-time, but this type of thing could be a good start.

Good luck,
Jennifer

I didn't read all of above but here are some quick thoughts:

1) always present yourself professionally when looking for work - No disrespect meant as this is meant to be a helpful comment, and I don't have time to proof read my own comments :) ... but I wouldn't post the fact I had to resit part 3 particularly alongside typos on this type of post - you never know who is reading and might be ready to offer a opening!
A few minutes proof reading and some capital letters and punctuation can go along way

2) Use Every resource! When I was in your position I did - The professionally bodies are meant to be there to support - if you pay any e.g. IOSH - use them. The RSC provided me with a career advice officer who reviewed CV / Set up work experience and provided career advice. One would hope IOSH are offering this kind of service now????

3)Specialise - I was much more successful in hit rates to interview when I used other core skills. A post to these forums saying I want to be a safety advisor went nowhere. Posts along the lines of Chemist with NEBOSH cert looking to specialise in chemical safety, got me where I am today.

4) Persist and hassle :) - I sent hundreds of letters to companies - it can never hurt, I made thousands of phone calls - just keep going! I was always told 10 applications = 1 interview, 10 Interviews = 1 job, and that was in the good old days!

5) Work experience - I worked for St John ambulance for many years, this proved invaluable when job hunting as I was able to volunteer and produce safety information for my division.

6) be prepared to accept low pay / temp work - I did and once I had a foot in the door it was easier to get more work... that said be wary of taking a job that is not what you want to do as it can be hard to get out!

Wise words and advice from teh_boy.

I am unemployed at the moment, hold the NGC and have many years experience in H&S roles.
All I can say is to follow the advice given in previous posts and keep trying. I have a 2nd interview tomorrow for a H&S role, but it has taken a lot of work over the past 12 months to get there.

Good luck.

My advice to you is not to focus on safety as a standalone role. Prudent employers will be looking at their governance and accountability structures these days to see whether it's feasable to move 'safety' into functional line roles equipping front line teams with the necessary safety skills to self govern. After all, they're the ones that deliver the service or product, and with respect, safety is just one bit of the delivery process.

So ultimately, you may finish up in a delivery role anyway with 'safety' as a bullet point on your job description.
