This is the first year since retiring that I have not received any PAID employment. However, I have continued to do CPD & pay my IOSH; IIRSM; BOHS CPD etc. fees & done voluntary work: i.e. Festival H&S officer, school H&S governor etc. Presumably unlike me, others have seen this coming ? Even voluntary organisations require us to maintain our memberships but obviously at our own expense ,should we get this tax rule changed?

pdurkin, what you are now doing is now akin to a hobby or pastime, using your past experience and knowledge to do that. Whilst I can understand your predicament, the fees you are incurring are no longer "neccessary in the course of employment" or whatever words HMRC are using. It is your choice now on whether to pay these fees.
The organisations that you support are getting your expertise and competence for free whilst you are paying for the privilege of volunteering. That's the usual model for volunteering.
I have a hobby that involves selling rare whiskies via a Ltd Company and I would dearly love HMRC to accept that all my tasting fees are tax deductible!

I assume that you are aware that IOSH offer concessionary membership for retired members at a (much) reduced fee?
