Nearly Friday...
I started a new role on Monday, more senior position but still focussed on Health, Safety, Environment. Got in nice and early, just got my coffee in front of me and starting to look at what I'm going to be working on... then it all unexpectiedly kicks off (can't go into detail) and it's been non-stop rollercoaster since.
All in all, probably the worst day of my career so far... and all on my first day.
So, I thought 'I can't be the only one this has happened to?' and thought I'd open it up to the collective, if nothing more to put things into perspective.
The question - What's your worst first day ever?

My first job after graduating, I turned up on the agreed day to find that the person that had interviewed me and decided to employ me and agreed my start date hadn't actually told anyone else what they'd done, and were on the first day of a weeks-long holiday. As far as the rest of the organisation was concerned, not only had I not been employed, the post I was employed to fill didn't even exist...

Arrived early on the Monday morning to meet the MD, expecting to be given full tour and introductions to staff as part of my induction.
Instead was greeted by Production Director who looked tired and disturbed, only for him to tell me that at 1am that morning there had been an accident and that he had been in work since 2am. Operator had got hand stuck in the infeed of a machine. Ambulance, fire brigade and police had all been on site through the night and the HSE inspectors were on there way to meet me.
The operator had been stuck in the machine for well over an hour before being released and taken to hospital. All they knew was that he had lost several fingers and there was concern that they might not be able to save his hand.
I had half an hour to get up to speed before the HSE arrived.

Many moons ago when the kids were small (now taller than me) I did a stint as a carer.
En route to my first job I was hit by another car (hit and run) turned out to be an uninsured driver, but in the collision he lost his number plate in the road which I duly took to the police station and he was arrested and taken to court.
Not wanting to let the clients down I carried on working. My first job was to help a gentleman get ready for bed. I bent down to get his PJ bottoms ready and turned round to find him fully naked ready for me to dress him, bit of a shock that one....
Next job a few years later and my first in H&S I had been really ill with gallstones prior to starting and actually started my new job 12 hours after being discharged from hospital and still suffering, really should have delayed my start but didn't think that would be the right thing to do.
Started new job 3 months ago, all okay so far.......
Though I think jfw's and achrn stories beat mine so far!

Current Role, was shown my office, given a key and log on by the site PA and sat down at my desk to 3 piles of paper work almost so high they were falling over with an additional 4 piles on the window cill!
That was my induction to the site and company (and its not a small site or company).
Not the worst (compared to above!) but could have been better!!

think it has got to be my partner who left her job to go and care and be a pa for a quite rich self employed disabled lady, turned up for work on the monday morning to sign contract to find that the lady had been taken to hospital after having a stroke late the night before and no job.
12 months on and lots of temping, she seems to have found a job she enjoys.

I wish that I had checked the HSE Enforcement Notice database before accepting that job, it would have given me a better idea of what I was letting myself in for. When I did move on, it was the first thing I checked before going to the interview. http://www.hse.gov.uk/notices/default.asp

I joined a ship once as the safety officer. On my second day onboard we were mobilizing in a Norwegian Fjord and were alongside at the quay. It was lunch time so there was no one on deck, I wasn't hungry so I decided to listen to my iPod in my office while everyone else went to lunch. I was happily humming away to myself and playing a bit of air guitar when the Captain came running in looking flustered. Apparently the fire alarm had been going for 20 minutes and I hadn't heard it because of my music. I followed him outside to the sight of entire crew mustered on the quayside. The night shift were not very happy as they had been woken up and had to stand there for 20 minutes while the marine crew tried to locate me. Everyone else thought it was hilarious and for the remainder of the trip I was known as iPod. I was obviously a bit embarrassed about it but the shift supervisor assured me that I wasn't the first and I won't be the last. Luckily it was a false alarm so no damage was done. We had extra alarms installed in the office and I bought some speakers for my iPod so I could listen to it without headphones.

Not so much jobs, but job interviews. First one up here in Aberdeen, just as I sat down, the zip burst open on my trousers in full view of the MD. Got the job.
Interview for 2nd job, was early, so I popped into McD's for a coffee to take away, which promptly exploded all down my front, scalding myself and covered in coffee, in the car park, trying to strip it off, rushed to Asda to find a cheap top, was late. Got the job.
This job - no mishaps, so took it as a bad sign - got the job! 1st week in, I put my car in a ditch, 3rd week in I broke down, 4th week in daughter fell ill. Still here though, working for an amazing company!

My old employer had many contractors on the books. They had their own vans, PPE / safety equipment etc. Overnight, a contractor was taken on permanent (PAYE) and continued as per normal. He got to his first job of the day as a full time employee and fell off his ladder (fractured his arm).
It transpired that although he had his own van, PPE / safety equipment, the company had failed to recognise he was now an employee, consequently failing to provide him with IITS incl. PPE / safety equipment etc.
He had received his new van and ladders but nothing else. His own van and PPE / safety equipment was parked outside his house - Oops!
Where do you start....
