We had a fire in an operating theatre this year whilst using a alcohol based prep solution and a diathermy unit. The swab caught fire and that led to the surgeons gown catching fire resulting in minor burns to the surgeon but the patient was OK. Anyone else experienced one of these incidents. I would love to know how often these incidents are occuring. The suppliers state that there has been a couple ?? But wont give details.

Surely the issue is one for the profession to resolve, not the supplier?
It is the surgery procedure which has brought a flammable liquied into proximity with an ignition source - the consequence is surely entirely foreseeable?

I remember this safety notice doing the rounds a few years ago :-

I friend of mine encountered a different type of problem with this type of product a couple of years ago. it was during the swine flu scare and the prison in which he works located these hand sanitizers throughout the building. As soon as they issued them, the noticed that a number of prisoners were getting drunk and realised that the sanitizers were the source of the alcohol they were drinking.

There have been a constant trickle of individual case reports in the surgical literature over at least 20 years or more.

If my memory serves me right, most have been associated with grossly excessive use of alcohol-based skin cleansers pool within cotton drapes. Its not exactly a common problem but a constant risk to the unwary who take insufficient care during draping and skin preparation.

MHRA have issued at least one warning, probably more over the years, and I half remember a warning letter from DoH/CMO

Search the clinical literature and you should find the information you require.

Not an isolated occurrence:

like Ian - I am sure there has been fairly recent reporting of this issue - it may have been MHRA but also the DH Estates & Facilities may be an idea for a search. Diathermy equipment is a medical device but the alcohol based solution I am sure came up as a Hazard alert from the DH. Regards
