good morning Ladies/ Gents,
I am in a Engineering role within a oil and gas firm, based in Europe. we have contractors on site using Forklift trucks and extended reach forklifts.
i am a litle concerned that the contractors are using one of the forks as a lifting hook, i.e. fitting a sling and hanging I beams on the sling.
although this in out of the HSE rules for UK, we try to adopt best practice when possible.
is this allowed in UK? ive been asked the question, but i dont want to go through the HSE department on site as there have already authorised this practice.
my concerns- swinging weight, chance that the load could slip off if the sling sides off the end of the fork, edges of the fork damaging the sling leading to object falling.
i would assume that this could be remidied with the use of a crane adaptor for the forklift?
your thoughts would be welcome

I would suggest that they need to be using both forks in order to steady the load. It is not best practice but has been done.
Forklifts can be used for lifting providing they have been tested and the weight is not above their capacity, has a lift plan been completed? It does not need to be as complicated as say a tower crane or mobile crane lift plan but there should still be something in place.
I would suggest that under best practice they use a specific lifting attachment, complete a lift plan and have it suitably supervised.

Thank you for your reply,
I also agree regarding the method of using both forks to support the load.

"Crane adaptors" don't have to be the full jib arrangement. A lifting point that clamps to one or both tines would reduce the risk of the strop slipping [or being cut by the fork tine edge].
One example-- http://www.liftingsafety...ok-3033.html#Description
