Can anyone offer guidance on a PPE footwear issue......
All employees working in a small warehouse must wear protective footwear as deemed by the R/A. Visitors to the site are escourted and stick to the walkways and do not have to wear PPE footwear.
The problem I have is that the customer comes on site for 30mins per week to complete a small stock check - this is to build our relationship with the customer etc. The stock checkers are usually office based staff and as such do not have protective footwear.
Questions)
Should they be treated as a contractor - hence they should complete a R/A to determine the need for footwear?
Should we provide protective footwear?
Any help is appreciated

It's your activities on your site that are creating the risk so you have a responsibility to assess the risk - not just to employees. However it would be sensible to discuss it with the customer first and come to an agreement about who will provide the PPE if it is really needed. Can the stock check be done in a way that PPE would not be needed?

If your requirement is for shoes off the designated walkways just ask them their shoe size and provide them a new pair of safety shoes to be stored at your workplace.
It's a gesture of good will on your part and should demonstrate your commitment to safety and customer relations for a minimal cost.
