Morning,
If I was looking to employ an electrician or an electrical contractor what qualifications should I be looking for i.e. what would be minimum, what would be good, what would be excellent?
I accept that qualifications are only a part of competency.
Electrician would be maintaining electrical installations in large buildings (offices/research institutes) and shops. They may also be engaged in setting up outside events (not pop concerts or things like that)
Would I be right in assuming that as there are different voltages e.g. 240vAC, 440vAC, 11kvAC, 25kvAC, 750vDC there are different qualifications required to work on each?
Thanks in advance for your time in replying

You get electrician or approved electrician
Your looking for a maintenance electrician, imwould prefer him to be approved and have a 2391 qualification, thats my preference
He may have experience in pat testing and a qualificationin that would be helpful. 2377 or something.
Experience with bms systems, air con, commercial kitchens, etc etc the list goes on.
He would generally be working on 230/400volt equipment.
Will he be controlling his own work etc, or will, someone tell him whatnto do?

Tony has said it all. If he/she has the 2400 even better. MUST have the 17th ed of the wiring regs (BS7671 as amended as that takes in out door events and the like

If the electrical contractor is a member of one of the registered schemes, then all this "should" be taken care of for you, if you are using them as a contractor.
The truth is though they are often in adequately assessed by the schemes.
If you are looking for an employee, the on top of the quals above, then it would be good if "he" is actually qualified as an electrician!
Again many aren't!
