Can anyone help with the marking requirements for hazardous substances????
Our vans can often carry quantities up to 200 litres of flammable paint and or thinners and nitrogen cylinders.
Also it has been known for them to carry acetylene in cylinders (securely located of course).
I'm going round and round with the ADR regs and getting myself tied in knots!
I was about to mark the vehicles with stick on diamonds for flammable liquids and gases, but I don't like using them as they are permanent. (I used to be a Firefighter and well remember the bother that an incorrectly marked vehicle can cause in an emergency situation.)
I was thinking of fitting 'flaps' with the diamonds on them that could be folded up when not required, like the orange placards you often see on vans etc.
What do others do in these situations?
Any suggestions?

Can you please let me have the packing group of the paint and the size of the receptacle, also the water capacity of the cylinders.
If you are under the amount in 1.1.3.6 of ADR you won't have to mark the vehicle with the hazard diamonds.

Paint and thinners are both in 25ltr tins (sometimes smaller)
Packing group III, ADR No. 3, UN Road No. 1263
Gases vary in size but can be of the largest size, is it 60 litres?

You do not have to mark the vehicles with the diamonds.
Have a look at 1.1.3.1 (c) or 1.1.3.6.2- both of these exempt the vehicle from being marked (5.3). As you vehicles have mixed DG's on board then its 1.1.3.6.4 that determines if you are "in scope".
Also, as its a vehicle carrying packages the diamonds depicting the hazard class are not used at all- its the orange coloured plate that indicates its carrying DG's. The stick on labels that you see on a lot of vehicles today are actually labels for packages, not vehicles. You wouldn't get prosecuted for having these on the vehicle- however- they should be removed when the vehicle is not carrying DG's.
If you need any further clarification- PM me your e-mail address.

You can get magnetic versions of the diamond if you are looking for a temporary sign option?

As motorhead has mentioned orange plates would be the only requirement. Placards are only required if transporting regulated Dangerous Goods above the thresholds: in a container, transporting Class 1 (Explosives) / Class 7 Radioactives or transporting goods immidiately prior to a sea crossing where placards are then required for that crossing.
Placards requirements do cause a lot of confusion, of course it does not help when you see white van man plastering his/her van with all and sundry !

So I have to install orange plates for when they are carrying goods?

Will depend on amounts being carried, also if you are carrying all these products together this is then worked out on a multiplier, and if 1000 is exceeded then orange plates would be required, be that individually or as a multiplier.
Example:
UN 1263 Paint PG III = Transport Category 3 on its own you can transport 1000 litres without displaying orange plates.
UN1263 PG III & UN 1066 (Nitrogen) both Tansport Category 3 so together if amounts do not exceed 1000 litres/kg then no orange plates, above this amount plates required.
Example:
UN 1263, UN 1066 & Acetylene (Transport Category 2) now, because you have more than one Transport Category e.g. three different Transport Categorys you have to use the multiplier, so if you had 200 litres of paint PG III you X that amount by 1, for the Transport Category 2 X by 3 so if you had 300 Kg this would equal 900. Then add the two together 900 + 200 = 1100 so you are over 1000 orange plates required.
Also awareness training commensurate with responsibilities, and 2 kg fire extinguisher required.
