When I presented a training matrix for our off site Field Service Engineers (who are home based all over the country and who travel all over the world for us), with the mandatory stuff being online learning for this reason (available on our corporate training system), my boss wasn't happy saying that we wouldn't have a leg to stand on if we had an accident and all we could prove was that we had given them online training - basically some environmental awareness, risk management and a comprehensive safety passport course. Other training that may be needed could very well necessitate traditional training, eg confined space, lifting, etc. I don't think he's thought through the logistics and the cost implications. Would appreciate your thoughts on this pls...

You are right in what you are saying. Many companies, mine included, use online training for inductions, environmental awareness, Quality Management System etc, as we have people based all over the place and its not feasible to get them all into the office to run through a training presentation. In the oil industry you can take your MIST course (basically an offshore safety passport) online, which I assume will be similar to your online safety passport.

Yes, the mode of training should be suitable for the type of training being carried out. E-learning type stuff is suitable for H&S awareness type training and things like DSE. But a more hands on subject like Confined Spaces would be difficult to do without actually being there in person. That’s what I think anyway.

To ensure that proper learning has taken place/is embedded suitable and sufficient feed back must be obtained and I bet that such learning is not the case in all but the most exceptional cases where on-line is considered. Additionally training and such like must be suitable for the individual concerned and many people are not 'right' for on-line training as they learn better in a group many companies say that they cannot afford other than on-line training but those same companies can always afford to get people together for a sales and marketing exercise or similar such situation e.g. one rule for one thing and one rule for another thing applies here my view is that training is at least as important as other areas and if the staff cannot get to a trainer the trained should get to the staff so evaluate all options before using on-line training systems

Hi, my company carry out a large amount of e-learning and this has just been H&S audited. With a few exceptions the auditors were very impressed with the training as there are safeguards in place to ensure staff cannot carry out certain duties unless they have completed the training. Basically the training consists of an actual information based module and then a scenario based module (with pictures and actions scenes) which you must pass to be issued with your competence certificate. Without that you cannot carry out the duties. The scenarios are always based on the type of area and work they are employed for so are much more likely to be suitable to an individual needs. If the employee gets the same scenario incorrect more than 3 times then the training module is stopped and they have to ring our learning and development team to discuss the issues that they are not understanding. This seems to work really well and we have very few candidates who cannot complete the training. I think if the company is willing to put together a far more realistic on-line training then this approach can work and reach all of your employees whether office based or in the field.

Hi, I introduced this into my previous company as we did little H&S training and only at 3 yearly intervals (if even). The package was very good, easy to manage and a full LMS for recording all training certs on line. We maintained classroom Induction session to review our site specifics but we used e-learning to run awareness training for Manual Handling, Chemical Safety, Principles of WAH, Slips/Trips, Fire Awareness, 5 Steps to RA, Workplace Safety, Stress awareness, DSE, Office Safety, Driving safety, electrical safety awareness & LOTO. In additonal to this we maintained our external training for Fire extinguisher, first aid, confined space, etc. I have to say, the e-learning system provided a structured and measurable awareness training to every employee in managable sections and regularly so safety principles were being brought to their attention every month. We could provide clear and robust evidence of training to auditors and the training helped with the development of safety culture and engagement in hazard observation and reporting as they all became more aware. The main challenge was to explain to Mgt team that this was a benefit and improvement for us but did not stop the need for specific SOP training in processes. We used a leading UK company and we could also develop our own training modules at additional cost. I certainly will be investigating this at my new job. I would be interested to here from others though who are using e-learning packages to hear what other providers are being used. If anyone wants to PM me it would be great to discuss this further.
