Hi all,
Does anyone know of a wrist band (or similar device) that vibrates to warn a deaf person of an alarm activation in the workplace?
Flashing lights/beacons are considered, but something more personal is being examined because of the nature of the work.
Thanks in advance,
Peter

Hi Peter
I only know of domestic solutions not of workplace ones, so will watch with interest.
I have two deaf workers on separate sites. When I signed to them they both signed back that when the fire alarm goes they can feel it, they sign for vibrations in the chest, which is quite interesting. One appears to experience the sensation less than the other, so he uses the flashing lights as a back up, a bit like a hearing person going 'what's that noise?' Then realising it's the fire alarm.
I wanted to see if we could get them something extra, particularly for the second worker. But both feel quite strongly that they're ok as they are. So far fire drills have been successful, in that they have both been able to evacuate.
The reason I mention this, is in case others are watching this thread and assume they have to do something. As with all risk assessments involving those with disabilities, you need to talk it through with them and be open and fair about your concerns. For British Sign Language users you may need an interpreter.
