I don't know how to put this, I have an employee who is extremely overweight, and he can't fit in the bath or shower at home, and has not washed for a very long time, and the employees are complaining as they work with him. I told them to speak to the Factory Manager and the operations manager. Its not really H & S any advice

My sympathies are both with the employee concerned, and also with his colleagues.
But you're right this is not really H&S; more HR. You've pointed them in the right direction of the Factory and Ops Managers (is it only a matter of time until they come to you, though.....?).
Good luck.

Health AND safety Terry. If he/she is doing the job then no problem, but if the person is putting themselves, or others, at risk due to the then you can act.
Not at all sure if size can be classed as a safety issue but I think it may well be.
Regarding personal hygiene perhaps one of the 'micro-bug' team can help out.

Hi Zimmy. I normally agree with your postings here, but have some reservations about your quote of 'size may well be a safety issue', particularly when Terry hasn't provided us with ANY details on what their job role is. Perhaps best wait to see if any further info is forthcoming from Terry (if he feels its required), if their size is an issue other than creating bosy odour issues? Cheers.

Hi Sunstone
What I meant by size was this. I had a 17 stone apprentice a few years back. He was sent into an attic space of a house on the Gower coast. After a few seconds I had to scream at him to lay on the rafters as the ceiling was bending. It turned out that the 'rafters' were 2'' by 2'' (about 100mm x 100mm) Russ was/is a fit chap by was on the large size (Rugby player) so size does matter :-) in some cases re H&S
In the case above, the person is said to be 'extremely overweight (probably unfit?), and he/she can't fit in the bath or shower at home' so I assumed he/she is large. Being of a large overweight and possibly ungainly shape his/her movements may well be restricted etc. (this is getting long-winded, sorry).
Evacuation down a fire exit stair case may also prove difficult as moving slowly and causing pushing and shoving by people trying to push past a gasping mobile chicane. But, perhaps I have incorrectly read this and if that is the case then an unreserved apology is offered. Big sorry to any extremely overweight people reading this, but I can't see how I can write this without offending you.
That is my limited view. If I were working next to someone who reeked of stale body odour I would have to explain to them, as sweetly as I could, that it is possible to stand at a sink top, talk a cloth in one hand and a bit of soap in the other at least make an attempt at washing.
No doubt I have upset a few but...
You are quite right Sunstone, detail is lacking so I have been a bit quick off the mark again :-(

What I don't understand is why one of his/her friends/workmates have not had a word in the persons ear on a one-to-one chat in the toilet or wherever. Even at home? Surly someone cares enough not to have had to get as far management? What a sad world we live in!
Hey ho
Rob
