The Natural History Museum is currently grappling with an argument that juggles good customer [visitor] services and safety.
As the main entrance to The Museum is graced with a wide set of [Grade I heritage listed] stairs, visitors often look to Museum staff for assistance to lift their pushchairs as they enter and exit.
In my dealings with the Front of House managers, I have already provided guidance regarding
* directing carers to alternative points of access
* insisting the child is taken out of the chair before it is lifted
* application of relevant manual handling techniques.
Naturally my concerns encompass to the risks to the workers, carers, children and the organisation as a whole.
Has anyone got any additional advice that I could be incorporated into a risk assessment?
Best wishes
Annette

As demonstrating the best possible care can be reassuring to all concerned, it may be worth considering issuing each wheelchair entrant with a version of the 'Mobility and Communications' (MAC) identifier used in some hospitals.

This is given to each carer/patient at the outset and goes with the patient throughout their journey; effectively it acts as a 'Special' security tag on which any critical information can be recorded at the outset, for use in the event of an incident/emergency.
