Hi there Does anybody know where I can find some guidance regarding safe excavation. especially the digging of trenches. I have found some stuff in my old NEBOSH diploma books, and also a little bit on the HSE website but its not very detailed. What guidnace would a construction company use? The reason I ask is that i have just stopped some builders working at one of my companies car parks (we are not in the construction business) as they had dug a large trench for some essential maintainence, and it had no edge protection, or side support. They tried to fob me off with the usal excuses. Now im not an expeert by any means on consrtuction or excavation safety as its not what my compnay does but i know enough to know it was unsafe. So would just like to find the appropaite guidance, to support any future issues i may have

also check that they were using CAT's or similar and ask who gave them permission to work on your land and update that person

thanks again all, in answer to Bobs comment, they had been autorised by the building facility manager...RAs and SWPs had been provided, but we definately failed on the supervison side of things as they were not working in line with what was detailed within their risk assessments
