Hi,
I have a requirement for HAZOP training and am looking at OnLine options. I've found two; one from IChemE and one from Abhisam. Does anyone have experience of these providers and give objective criticism? Also does anyone know of other providers? Finally what are people's thoughts about online vs real world courses for HAZOP training?
Many thanks, Adrian

The essence of Hazop is that is is a small group activity during parts of which individuals spark ideas off each other. A key element of of the training is usually to role play such a group, using an example drawing.
So I personally would be extremely suspicious of on-line Hazop training, as it doesn't then provide any expereince of these group interactions. That said, if it is 'awareness training' before attending your first session, maybe that's OK. However, a good Hazop leader will always brief newcomers on the process and the expectations for participants, so paying for an on-line briefing as well doesn't seem cost effective.
If you are wanting the training to become a Hazop secretary or, worse, a leader, then I would suggest it is not possible to gain the required competences solely on-line. If IChemE offer such traing for prspective leaders I'm very surprised.
FYI, I post this as an experienced Hazop leader, who first learned the methodology in ICI where it was invented, in 1970s, and then practiced it up to 1990s. Earlier this year I completed some refresher training with a very experienced team and learned that nothing has changed much in the process, though recording is now much more detailed - again, not something you can easily learn on-line.

I have to agree.
As an experienced HAZOP Chairman, while clearly you can read about HAZOPs both online and via books, you can't really become competent until you have taken part in a number of HAZOPs.
They aren't too demanding - but you do need to have the experience of interacting with other technical disciplines, which quite clearly you can't do by self study/via online resources etc.

Thank you both for your responses. I understand what you are saying and it is food for thought. Thanks again, Adrian
