The new British Standard for Ladders BS EN 131-2:2010+A1:2012 requires ladders to be marked with a new categorisation system. My place of work has numerous ladders that were purchased prior to the the new standard being introduced - the plan is to scrap these ladders, this seems nonsense.
How are other workplaces addressing the change to the standard?

It's a BS with the onus on the manufacturer/supplier to comply with the marking requirements - not the end user!!!!

I don't have access to the BS but I suspect (as does Ron, I think) that you have misinterpreted the requirement.

I would have thought that the requirement is that all NEWLY manufactured ladders would need to have the new markings, but I wouldn't think (I'm pretty sure not) that there is any requirement to go around marking old ladder with the new standard number.

Yup, I'd agree with above comments. We design the tags and checklists to put onto ladders. This is for the ladder manufacturers to comply with not the end-user. Though going forward it should be something that buyers of ladders should consider stipulating in their requirements. As with virtually all new/amendments to Standards, there is no requirement to retrospectively mark existing ladders with these labels.

Agree with Ron and canopener - you wouldn't mark retrospectively anyway - replace when they fall due.

Probably me being a cynic.

Where did this "plan" come from? A ladder salesman?

I agree with the above comments.
