I have a project where a large scaffolding with be erected 13 floors high for a total length exceeding 600 metres. The entire ground floor of the scaffolding will be clad in a 3m solid timber boarding 'fence' with razor or barbed wire top to keep kids and thieves off site.
I need to consider how many means of escape doors are set within the fence, but I know I will get resistance if I ask for too many and therefore will have to justify the spacing. I could use the Govt guides to determine the spacing, but I am aware that there are standards/guidance out there for fire safety on building sites. The MOE doors will also be for fire service access as the fire service will not be able to access the scaffolding via ladders or from inside the building
Can anyone please tell me which is the latest and most definitive guide for fire safety on building sites, and if possible, can you tell me whether it mentions the provision of fire exits from enclosed scaffolding compounds such as this, or indeed, maintaining fire service access???
Many thanks

HSG168 may help, I presume all your work is outside and there is no means of escape into the bulding, from the limited information we have the maximum travel distance is given in 168 , so perharps as a starting point how many access/egress points you will have on your scaffolding, i.e. haki staircase, ladders which lead to ground level then to a place of safety.

Hi Messy
As above poster mentions HSG 168 gives information in Table 1 on maximum travel distances. Also may be useful to you unless you already have it:
Fire Prevention on Construction Sites (The Joint Code of Practice on the Protection from Fire of Construction Sites and Buildings Undergoing Renovation) Seventh Edition published May 2009
(Eighth Edition is now available from the FPA Web Site)
Cheers
