I have a client who is already a member of Safe Contractor and has just renewed, But he has been asked by one of his major clients to go onto a different scheme, notably the Contractor Plus scheme. Which is better and why? I have my ideas but I just would like some different views. Any suggestions?

Tongue in cheek answer I'm afraid The best one is the one that wins you the contract - everything else is just ticking boxes and giving third parties monies, that is if you already have a good HSMS.......

Would agree with teh boy, it has become a money making exercise for the various providers. Doesn't really matter which one you have, clients may insist on another one and you just have to jump if you want the work. We have CHAS / Achilles / Constructionline / BMTrada

They all originated from a perfectly sensible idea but have become money making scams that appeal to lazy clients who think they can shift their responsibilities. Basically get involved if thats whats needed to win work, otherwise steer well clear.

Tony, This is taken direct from the SSIP website: "The SSIP Forum will: act as an umbrella organisation to facilitate mutual recognition between health and safety pre-qualification schemes wherever it is practicable to do so." The theory was that the different schemes could all be seen as one for the purposes of "checking out" prospective contractors in terms of H&S. The problem is that many procurement procedures specify certain schemes, thus making the SSIP a nonsense! I have recently started out as a consultant & one prospective client just wanted me to make sure that they ticked all the boxes so that they could jump through a H&S hoop. I was also asked "which one is the best" & "should we belong to all of them" - at the time, I counted 19 schemes! I declined the work for a number of reasons, but ostensibly felt that this wasn't what the original schemes wanted to achieve & I agree totally with Walker that yes, it was initially a sensible idea, but that it has come off the rails.

From vague recollection of people rabbiting about it, isn’t there also a scheme called Chas & Dave?!! . o . < ) (Mark II prototype mega-smiley to indicate that the above response shouldn’t be . o taken too seriously)

Where would we be without your sparkling wit, Graham.

It's flattering to see my attempts at humour described as 'sparkling wit'. Also my attempts probably place me in breach of some obscure forum rule or tradition which limits humour to Fridays. Also, I'm abandoning further attempts at mega-smileys: The published versions always appear as squashed mutations because somehow the forum system ignores some but not all of the typed spaces used in the submitted versions. As for accreditation schemes, I've never relied on or had much time for them, mainly on the basis of long experience that contractors are only as good - or bad - as their latest and current projects. In some cases it seems that the managements of contract companies and organisations have become complacent through over-reliance on good reputations and accreditations and allowed OS&H and other standards on current projects/contracts to slip.
