An old theatre in hospital is being turned into offices on the first floor. The ground floor is storage underneath and the floor above is a plant room. Question is we are altering the layout of the proposed offices but not the compartmentation structure, so do we need to make the ceiling 60 minute separation. The building is less than 18 m high and was built 50 years ago. My thoughts are yes, BASED ON BUIDING STRUCTURe, can anyone offer additional input

Hi SBH, It's too open a question without more information. Is the ground floor storage area fitted with fire suppression? What is the construction of the existing floors/ceilings? What type of theatre, lecture/operating? Type of plant in the plant room?
Simplest way to get an accurate response to your query is to ask the designer.

When did it stop being a theatre theatres usally have better compartmentation than offices due to the patient risk(carry on treating the patient on the slab until the fire is licking up at the walls) have a good look at the plans to see what you have is it concrete construction or lythe and plaster identify all the seperation compartments and sub compartments also identify the hazard, there is no sleeping risk are all persons able bodies ,is there at least 2 escape routes, do you have protected lobbies, is the signage correct,is there escape lighting is there back up gennyneed to look at it all if in dought get estates to get a fire surveyer in, get them to spend a shilling or 2
