I recently attended an LPG course dealing with LPG fixed gas installations and refuelling of FLTs. Excellent course but one question concerning fire extinguishers has come out of it. We have two extinguishers adjacent to the fixed tank, one is powder and the other is foam The course instructor recommended that powder only extinguishers should be used but our extinguisher contractor insists it should be foam. Any ideas?

the extinguishers should be powder, LPG is a class C fire, foam only smothers and would be no good against gas

have alook at the symbols on the foam extinguisher, it can only be applied on Class A, and Class class B fires, LPG is Clas C

Even better, turn the gas off. If you extinguish the flame but don't turn the gas off - you will get a gas cloud forming which could well re-ignite/explode. Dry powder is the extinguisher to use, to beat back the flame and hopefully give access to the bottle valve/regulator to turn the gas off.
