Can anyone give any guidance regarding scaffold inspection and what level of training would be required to inspect design scaffolds.

I ask the question as some of our Site Managers have attended the CISRS scaffold inspection course at the CITB and the trainer is insisting that anybody who is required to inspect design scaffolds (outside of TG20:08, not quite sure what is meant by this) need to either be an advanced scaffolders or hold an advanced scaffold inspection card or equivalent.
The site managers are all experienced and are capable of reading a scaffold drawing so that can interpret what the components are and therefore can identify where the scaffold is not meeting the design drawings, so do they need further training as they are more than competent to read and inspect a design scaffold and make a decision that it fails to meet the design.

Your comments will be appreciated as the cost and time implication could be great if additional training is required.

Many Thanks

Seems to me your trainer is trying to drum up additional buisness,
You have provided the answer already yourself,
as you have deemed your site managers to be competent, to complete the inspection:
1. They have had training
2. They have expierence
3. they have the knowledge
Obviously there may be times when they would need additional assistance, depending on the complexity of the scaffolding, location etc etc, this is when perharps, you would require they type of inspection, that your trainer is suggesting, there is many routes to go with this as I am sure we will find out

Make sure you have the design drawing - no drawing then NO design can be proved to exist - then your people should be able to work with confidence.

TG20 is for tube and fitting scaffolds, BS12811-1 is for system scaffolds.

Not all design scaffolds fall into advanced criteria so you do not need to be an advanced scaffolder or attend an advanced scaffolding inspection course to inspect all design scaffolds. Many scaffolds have to be designed these days but are also covered in Basic Scaffold Inspection and the Scaffolders Training. Within the scaffolding industry it is accepted that a Scaffolder can inspect scaffold structures he/she has been trained to erect and Advanced Scaffolders can inspect scaffold structures he/she has been trained to erect. There after it is recommended the non scaffolders attend a Basic Scaffold Inspection Course and if suitable an Advanced Scaffold Inspection Course. Of course you could choose to step outside these parameters but obviously make sure you can demonstrate your inspectors competence, experience ect.
