Hi all
A few years ago I was approached about becoming a volunteer safety rep for my current employer down in the south west. The role involves me carrying out risk assessment, health surveillance, incident/accident investigation and environmental audits for ISO14001. As I felt unqualified to carry out these duties I started self funding and gaining relevent qualifications. I have now gained;
Nebosh General, Construction and Fire Certificates. Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health Certificate in Environmental Management Certificate in Incident Management and Investigation ISO14001 Auditor
I have been in this unpaid role that I still thoroughly enjoy for five years now. However, the lack of financial support from my employer has helped me decide that I now would like a full time health and safety role. To date I have applied for half a dozen jobs and only secured one interview. What am I doing wrong?

Not much - its tough out there at the moment with a lot of experienced people looking for work - just keep plugging away and hope for a turn in your luck and the economy.

Brett, I think 1:6 interviews/applications is quite good especially in the current employment climate I wouldn't be disappointed in that. When I was unemployed in 2000 and again in 2008 typically on average I got an interview for every 10 applications and an offer every 10 interviews (1 to 50 for agencies). In my experience it gets increasingly difficult as you approach 60. Good luck. Steve

Bmann, any update on a job?
I too have gone down the route of self funded study whilst I was a home carer for my Mum, but my Mum died 6 months ago and in the last 2 months I have started to look harder at trying to get a proper job.
I have similar certificates to you (I tried the diploma and failed all and will try resits in the coming years). Recently I got some more certificates for working at height and today completed my First Aid At Work certificate.
I have the Nebosh Construction Certificate booked for March, but I've wondered about getting those other 2 certificates you have and in particular, the certificate in Environmental Management and maybe the Incident Investigation - not sure.

Since Cyril Sofer published 'Men in Mid-career' in 1968, research has shown time and time again how people in mid-career stand out in the crowd of job seekers by evidence of trust and relationship building.
To the extent that evidence you present conveys your capabilities along these lines, it's likely to be less difficult for you to stand out in the crowd.
To the exent that you find it difficult to assemble and communicate such evidence, perhaps you may benefit from practical help from a third party skilled in work of this kind. Like the poet Robbie Burns highlighted, it's a divine blessing for folk to 'see themselves as others see them' and to use such information shrewdly.
