Worker has an existing back complaint. He is walking down some stairs when his back "spasms" causing him to drop what he is carrying. He goes to hospital in some pain and then has to go home. He does not return to his next shift - signed off.

Is this an accident?

If he is off >7 days, would it be RIDDOR reportable?

Would value peoples opinions, the fact the guy has an existing back complaint is confusing the issue for me a bit!!

Thanks in advance for replies.

I guess it depends what he was carrying – how heavy, unwieldy etc, etc, and whether or not what he was carrying was work related. If it was his lunch box or cup of coffee etc then incident not work related and therefore not RIDDOR. However, if he was carrying something in connection with his work then it IMHO it would be reportable.
