I work on site all over the uk within the broadcast industry and need some clarification. Is it acceptable not to prvide toilet facilities when there are facilities available a short distance away say for example a local Tesco's or Macdonalds? Clearly duraion and amount of personnel will be a factor. Some sites are 3 days and have no more the 3 people on site usually working only 10 hours max. Can some one answer this and perhaps back it up with some facts that I can use as evidence to argue with my employer?

Thanks in advance

Go to the HSE's website and download a copy of CIS59 and INDG293. Also if you type welfare facilities into their search facility you will find numerous references that should provide you with an answer. INDG293 suggests using a third party facility as a last resport.

If its a one off this would be acceptable IF you had prior permission from the owner of the toilet facilities.

As its a regular occassion you should be providing welfare facilities. The workplace Welfare Regs give the requirements of what you should be providing.

HSE website has a downloadable leaflet with the requiremnts including temporary site. (INDG 293 Rev).

Why don't you look at getting a mobile welfare vehicle as used by a lot of the utilities companies for their remote sites?

Hope that helps
