Hi Everyone,
I have been looking at our external lighting levels in our car park / yard.
There is out Fork Lift and several couriers coming in and out of the area. With the dark afternoons drawing in I wanted to check want light levels we had and now I have the LUX levels I realised I am not sure what LUX levels we should have in the areas.
Readings went from 66.2 where we have installed extra lighting (although for security reasons) to as low as 2.6 and 5.5 in the areas where our Fork Lift is operating.
Any one got advise on lighting levels for external areas.
Thanks in advance
Richard

There is some basic information in HSG38; the CIBSE guide is better but I don't think is available online.

It's not a simple as a lux level as there are so many factors to take into account. HSG38 details quite a bit.

In addition to HSG38, review HSG76, which makes reference (and copies in it's table) information from HSG38.
There are a number of factors, but looking at the Lux level I'd say 2.6 would be too low and 5.5 maybe too low depending on the activity taking place.
For areas where the forklift is loading / unloading (as appose to just moving) I'd recommend a minimum of 20 and average of 50 (it's what we work to). In vehicle traffic routes where there is no loading / unloading but just movement then minimum 5 and average 20.

Best to do a rough plan of the area and take regular readings at say 1 m intervals, and then get an average for the area.
it needs to be at the point ie the hieght you require the appropriate illumination, ie desk lighting measure at desk level and in the plane that you want measure and the obvios make sure your body doesnt obscure the existing lighting levels.
Use relux ar dialux free lighting software for some info
