Depends on what you want and equally importantly what resources you have to maintain it. Our organisation is basically a scientific R&D organisation where everybody has access to the intranet. We therefore use it as our main source of H&S information for the whole organisation. We have over 200 pages of info including: • Health and Safety Policy • Health and Safety procedures • Guidance on how to do risk assessments (not the assessments themselves; they belong to the users) • Guidance on the common hazards eg chemicals, radiation, microbiology etc. It is a very comprehensive and useful source of information BUT it takes a lot of time to keep it upto date and we have gotten a bit lazy as we assume if it’s on the intranet everybody knows about the topic.

It will depend on what you want to get from the page and people to have access to using the intranet. The intranet in my organisation is our tool for providing all information to a wide spread workforce and we include policies, procedures, guidance but also learning from accidents, general information updates, announcements regarding training, stats and reports, minutes from meetings etc.

Use words, numbers, photographs, cartoons and graphs to arouse interest in the great variety of ways in which enabling people to work safely delivers great value

It's a great place to give access to msds, manuals etc and also to incident/issue reporting.

We have a safety alerts section which headlines anything recent. We have the relevant policies, procedures and guidelines (all these documents are also accessible via a route through the QA system page). We have all the H&S related forms used in the business. We have a sub-page for the safety committee with minutes of meetings and mugshots of members We have a sub-page for each location which lists stuff like fire instructions (escape routes maps, assembly points and so on), first aid instructions (locations of kits, mugshots of first aiders), and links through to the site-specific risk assessments, COSHH paperwork (including data sheets). I doubt anyone uses most of this stuff, but it's a more accessible store location than a filing cabinet somewhere. We have pages with links to various external places - HSE information, SCOSS and CROSS bulletins, that sort of stuff. We have documents relating to H&S related training that has been delivered in-house (so, eg, we have an update seminar on a topic, then the presentation, any handouts or notes etc is archived there). We have a project debrief process, and where there is a H&S lesson learned that goes here. We have a link to our in-house wiki that has a number of safety categories where people can put anything they like on. I try and encourage people to put notes about any external training they've had, any lessons learned, that kind of stuff on there.

Start from the principle that it isn't your page, it's your customers page. You could ask them now, but certainly ask for feedback at beta or after a spell. You should provide ready access to all key documents (policy, procedures, forms, reports etc). You might want to review the faqs you come across and post them - that can save you a bit of work over the year! The great thing about the Intranet is that you can add and modify to your hearts content - but always be aware of how the customer perceives your page and think about how you and others navigate the web.
