hey,

I am currently studying for the nebosh diploma and I am looking for a work placement to gain some hands on experience but I am having no luck. I have sent near on 100 emails to various construction firms and health & safety consultants offering my services on a voluntary basis in exchange for support, advice and a reference but so far I have had no luck...... I have seen several other similar stories posted on here in the past so I know I am not alone, but I am starting to think I should give up and go back on the tools, but that would be such a waste as I have paid for the nebosh construction cert & the diploma out of my own pocket in order to get in a good position to find employment.

Several weeks ago I contacted IOSH and explained my situation and asked to be considered for the work place shadow scheme as advertised on this website.... after several non-returned phone calls and emails I was finally informed that ''The scheme is presently under renewal and currently there aren’t any placements running''.......... maybe if IOSH got their act together and got this scheme going, it would give people like me the opportunity to get out there and gain the experience required to secure full time employment........ If IOSH (the largest health and safety membership organisation in the world!) does not offer a support system for newbies such as myself, who are we meant to turn to?

Seeing as IOSH cannot help me, I would like to ask my fellow forum readers for assistance. If there is anybody out there in the london/s.east/home counties areas who is looking for an assistant, trainee or even just willing to offer me a couple of months of voluntary work experience, please get in touch with me.

Thank you in advance for your help / advice.

Good luck on that shadow job, I've been looking too - without success. Most say insurance is the problem with shadows / interns. When I took a degree in 2003, I was meant to work as a shadow in my gap year, no work then, so did another year of extra study and completed that degree with a 2.2

I have done my safety diploma over the last 2 years and failed so far, a lot to do with remembering stuff and nobody to give advice - which is what you get when you're in work.

I have a construction certificate lined up for March/April next year, so hopefully maybe I can get some work that way - on a site. I have a bit of experience - but not in safety.
