Varnish/Lacquer finish to fire doors and timber panels in lobby areas

Hi All,
Would like some views on the above when doing a fire risk assessment. If come across varnished fire doors and timeber panels on in the common areas of a purpose built block of flats, and it appears to have been in place for several years. Would you see this as a significant risk (if the the rest of the common areas are fairly fire sterile).
If this is for a social housing type client, would you see it as reasonable/important to ask the client to confirm which type of varnish was used, and to recommend fire retardent sprays etc.
Thanks in advance
