Due to multiple inner room situations with no other control measures possible, I need to find a suitable smoke detection system for an enclosed (not open air or open sided) multi-storey car park.

I am considering either beam detection or video smoke detection, as heat detection will be too slow to provide a safe egress time. But which system will cope with occasional exhaust fumes (and steam in this cold weather) without triggering unwanted fire signals.

I would appreciate any views....

erm... erm....

Have fun with that one!

How about a gas detection system?
One that would detect high levels of carbon monoxide? (higher than a vehicle exhaust),
Formaldehyde detector?

I'm just trying to think of gases present in a typical fire but not exhaust fumes.

Heat detector no good.
Ionising detectors no good.
Beam detectors too sensitive?

I come back to same as you... heat imagery or gas detection.

If you want to deviate from type H detection, then you could consider VESDA or VESDA ECO linked to HVAC having a possible benefit on HVAC running cost.

Would a VESDA system work in this environment?

By my experience it would be far too sensitive and give false positives for the slightest amount of smoke.

Such as a smoky diesel car?

Unless you can now get systems which will discriminate between types of smoke?

Hi Messy.

We have recently been looking at replacement systems, one new system apparently can tell the difference between smoke and steam by using two different kinds of wavelengths of light emitters UV and IR i think, The rep claimed it can even tell the difference of foreign objects like birds etc, go into fault when blocked and constantly monitor then reset when the object had gone

I guess I cant put the trade name up, it sounded really good but of course came with a price tag. They called it Open area Smoke Imaging Detectection or OSID. Not sure how it would cope with diesel smoke though.
