Hi, I have had some scaffolding erected at one of my sites for some roof works. I noticed an issue with the base plates and wondered if someone could kindly give me a second opinion on wheter it is actually an issue or not.
Base plates have a central locating pin... designed to fit into the bottom of the standards (upright tubes). Should the pin be fitted into the standard under all circumstances or is it ok for the standard just to rest on the base plate next to the pin...The scaffolder says it doesnt matter if the pin is in the tube or not. I disagree as surely there could be the potential for slippage if the locating pin is not fitted into the standard?

There are a couple of different type sole plates but the ones you mention seems a bit odd (and a bit idle) not to put the locating pins in when they are designed for just that! Some sole plates do not have this locating pin so would not be a consideration but when they are used its just silly not to use them as intended!

By your description of roof works, I am assuming this may be hanrail to an existing roof. If the standards are against the wall tight then you can't get the standard on the centre pin of the plate. Ultimately not an issue but if no obstruction then just indicative of poor behaviour. Remember the sole plate is there to distribute the point load off the tube. Hence steel plate to increase the surface area and prevent the tube cutting into the sole board. Hope that helps.

Thanks
The standards were pretty close to a wall, the scaffolding was there to support guardrails which went along the edge of a flat roof to provide fall protection for some guys working up there..they did actually say they had trouble getting the base plates in place due to the position of the standards in relation to the wall..They didnt use sole boards as the base plates were on a concrete pavement.
I was uncomfortable as the base plates are obviously designed to fit into the standards via the locating pin and this design feature wasnt being properly utilised. If the locating pin isnt used isnt there a risk of slippage?
