have had conflicting info - one company say emergency lighting can be tested with 1 hour discharge once a year - another says twice yearly one with 1 hour and the other with three hour discharge and 1 hour alone is non compliant. what do you do?

Ask them to reference their advice, in writing.

I test mine twice a year on the one hour. To be honest they fail like nobody's business and cost a fortune.plus they are tested once a month for half hour

The length of discharge depends on the type of location/use of the building as set out in BS5266 -1: 2011 ( most recent version).
The discharge test is only required once a year ( BS 5266-8:2004 or BS EN 50172:2004) but all should be subject to monthly user checks aas set out in sectio 7 of BS EN 50172. Hope this help
