I was wondering if anyone has previously addressed the wearing of turbans instead of hard hats in other places of work other than construction? A worker wearing a turban refuses to wear alternative head dress to enable him to wear a hard hat however, IND(G)262 states; - Other places of work The exemption from the requirement to wear head protection only applies to construction sites. In other workplaces there are no exemptions from the requirement to wear head protection for turban-wearing Sikhs. Any worker who refuses to wear head protection may be in breach of Regulation 10 of the PPE Regulations and Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Within guidance note IND(G)262, it also states; Risk assessments may indicate, in a number of limited circumstances that turbans offer adequate protection against injury to the head from striking against objects, and where bump caps might otherwise be needed. However, the turban would not offer satisfactory protection where there are risks from falling objects and standard industrial safety helmets are normally provided. However, the risk assessment determined the risk being high, hence the need for hard hat rather than bump caps. Ensuring compliance with the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 namely; - Use of personal protective equipment; Regulation 10(1) Every employer shall take all reasonable steps to ensure that any personal protective equipment provided to his employees by virtue of regulation 4(1) is properly used. So with all these in mind, I see no exception to the regulation. Could anyone guide?

Paul You are quite right about the exemption only applying to construction sites http://www.hse.gov.uk/fo...ocs/200-299/oc282_27.htm Above is a link to the HSE web site that states the fact very clearly. However, I have seen a hard hat that can be worn over a turban, and I am trying to find the information on it - will let you know if I can find info
