Hi

We have a metalwork factory used for welding (MIG) on steel, and it has LEV and air-fed masks. We also have roof ventilation and the workshop itself is quite big with good air movement and circulation. The LEV’s are checked as per Regs etc, and workers have been trained in how to use the air fed masks etc.

We were visited by the HSE recently. They were happy with what we had in place, however they have asked us to carry out a COSHH assessment to demonstrate why they were selected in the first place (about 10 years ago), to ensure they are suitable.

Is this a bit like backtracking? Where do I start with this? Does anyone have any examples?

There is a wealth of advice and guidance on the HSE site.

See http://www.hse.gov.uk/welding/guidance/index.htm

While it might seem like backtracking, without a risk assessment that defines why you have what you have, it is difficult to review your systems.

There may also be activities peripheral to welding such as cutting, surface preparation, grinding, solvents, etching, gouging, etc. Don't forget these, as they present a different set of hazards with a different set of issues.
