I am very surprised in the present economic climate that more training companies are not trying to attract more business with promotions, special offers or easy payment options for those of us who self fund.Unless someone knows differently.
If I was getting my training paid for by my company I suppose it would not be as much of an issue but self funding is extraordinarily expensive.
The only way I can do my diploma is with my local college who let you spread the cost over the term of the course with the final payment due a month before the end of the course.
As part of my CPD I wanted to attend an Environmental course but the cost for the Nebosh is around £800 or more depending who you are with and I don't have that sort of money sitting in my account to spare.
I really don't like the elearning approach ,it suits some but not me,I guess I will have to wait until I have completed my diploma.
I am based in Middlesbrough and work throughout the North East

I appreciate your problem. However, as someone who is involved in organising open courses, we also have our problems. In these hard times numbers tend to be lower than normal. In order to cover fixed costs, e.g. venue, refreshments, handouts, etc., we have to set the fee at a level where a relatively small number of participants covers the cost and some remuneration for our time. It might sound logical that by offering the course to certain categories of participant at a lower rate we would swell the numbers and thus help cover costs with a lower course fee. Experience says that it doesn't happen though and that in at least one case we seriously upset a participant when he discovered that he had paid more than others for the same course.

Hi Chris,I know there is no easy solution ,having looked at going into training myself I know the costs involved and they are not cheap.
I would not be able to afford the Diploma without an ongoing payment plan while completing the course but can understand a company not wanting to provide training upfront and then risk not getting paid.
Maybe an early bird type payment might help, most people understand and accept these.
I think my post was more of a slightly frustrated observation than looking for a solution that is not there.
The fact is training is very expensive and in this climate when it is not a necessity it will not get a high priority by most as you will probably know better than me !!
Thanks for the reply

For courses that are up to 12 or 16 months in length, could you not just use a 0%-on-purchases credit card?

Other than the diploma which I am already self financing most courses are from a day to 2 weeks such as the Nebosh Environmental Cert or Fire Cert ,IOSH courses at the Grange are £234 for each day of the course for IOSH members but added to that are the travel costs and if more than 1 day accommodation as well.
I guess for the time being they remain on my "would like to do list"
