Horizontal (Life Lines) Safety Lines on flat roofs

Can anybody tell me what sort of things I should consider when tasking an operative to work on a flat roof with a safety line on the roof top? I am considering using this safety line with a restraint harness.
Do these lines require 6 monthly tests?
Is there a training course that is recommended for the use of these safety lines i.e. industry standard training courses?
What is the safe working distance I to be deployed when working on the roof?
Do the operatives require restraint harness training? I understand that you require training on a fall arrest harness but is it necessary for fall restraint?
Do I require a detailed emergency response plan?
Sorry for the long line of questions..............................

Have a look at HSG33 Health & Safety in roof work. Pages 14, 15, 16, 31, 32, 33, 64, 65 & 66 contain a very good starting point to answer all your questions.
Yes you need training in how to use the system & harness Yes you need an rescue plan if something goes wrong requirement of Work at height regs 2005 yes the lines need testing. Test certificate will also gives info re:loading (ie how many people is the line design to restrain in case it goes wrong)
For your mental inbox: Is the roof structurally sound? Any fragile materials inc skylights? Where are your access points? Do you need to load material onto roof? if yes how?

If you base your risk assessment on the W@H hierarchy to start with?? Can you prevent the fall etc etc What type of work what is duration of work how many persons required Remember mansafe system is primarly for short term maintainance work; The system does require testing your operative should be trained in the system he should have had harness training you would have to decide on what type of lanyard would be required. Restaint > prevents the operative from falling Fall arrest > should only be used when you have no way of preventing the fall, if this is the case then you would require rescue procedure can edge protection be put in place thus removing the need for PPE Dont really understand question on safe working distance on roof, you must consider access to the point where the operative can clip on. As I dont know what work has to be done, the size of the roof etc etc, it is hard to give direction/help. but if you base it on W@H assessment you wont be far away

Good advice Bob!
Q. Why go down the PPE/harness route when there are so many temporary edge protection solutions in the market place.
Jarsmith 83, PM me if you need some help.
