Hi guys, I have an interview for a H&S role with a mining company.
Has anyone experience of the industry, possibly give me some advice?

Thanks

While I don't have any OH&S experience in mining - I would offer the following for your consideration:

1. Research the company as much as you reasonably can, so if asked a"what do you know about us" type question (I've been asked this myself, as have other practitioners I know), you can offer an informed response. This also demonstrates you are seriously interested in the position, in my view.

2. Become familiar with the primary OH&S issues facing that sector if possible, along with the basics of the applicable legal framework they operate within (I may be off base here, because in my part of the world, mining is in a different regulatory jurisdiction from almost all other industries). As above, if they ask you questions, you will be in a better position to respond.

Best of luck with your interview!

Step 1, identify the type of interview it will be. Is it:
- technical; or
- Competency based

This should then direct your study and preparation.

For a technical interview you will be (obviously) tested on your technical ability so expect to be asked questions about the legislation and your implementation / management of health and safety and all other aspects of the job description.

For a competency based interview by-and-large you will not be asked specific health and safety questions, the questions will be more generic and you must answer in a structured format (STAR / CAR etc.). I.e. you must back-up everything you say with examples. Google "example competency based questions" I read and familiarised myself with at least 200 before my recent interview (which was successful). If it's 100% competency I would spend only a very limited time on the technical stuff, but spend your time memorised good examples for the variety of competency questions they could ask.

Note: some interviews will combine both technical and competency based questions, ask the company / recruiter to 100% confirm the interview style.

I've had 2 competency based interviews in the last 4 months and neither of them asked any technical question or asked anything really about health and safety, I made the mistake for the first and had gemmed up on every conceivable law and practical management of H&S etc, I wasn’t asked a single question and then couldn't reel off good enough examples for the competency questions.

For my most recent interview and didn’t even look at any law etc, nor was asked any question, but I did have a memory bank of excellent examples for every scenario they threw at me :-)
