I'm looking for some advice......I was approached to provide advice - voluntary basis only - to my local semi-pro football club. Without hesitation I accepted theri invitation without reallyfully thinking things through. Whilst I remain keen to help in whatever way that I can I'm not completely clear about the 'dos and donts'. Firstly, is it necessary/advisable that I should protect myself with regard to any advise that I might offer and potential liability arising there from. In the real world, I'm employed as HSQ Manager full-time and have never acted as a consultant or similar so am not clear about personal/professional liability for any advise offered in an unpaid capacity. Secondly, I'm unsure of what is already in place so would be very grateful if anyone has any resource that they might share or to which they might point me so that I can get my head around the 'must haves' the 'nice to haves' and the 'what the bloody hell are you wasting your time on that stuff for' things. Cheers. PS - I did a search for previous postings and did pick up one or two things but figured a fresh appeal might bear more fruit

For me the key word's are "semi pro" sounds like there is employment in this relationship. In which case I would say yes get some insurance or get the club to employ you on a nominal fee so you are covered on their insurance just like your main job. Try the Internet for a copy of The Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds also known as the green guide as a good starting point. Good Luck Brian (A Happy Bantams Fan on his way to Wembley)

There may be two aspects to any help given; firstly the OH&S side of any organisation, & secondly, match day safety, which is entirely different, although they should dovetail with one another. If you are working on a consultancy basis, then I would suggest that PI & PL Insurances are essential. Zyggy
