Do the new rules re asbestos surveys apply to premises with existing survey reports, i.e. a type 2 survey carried out in 2008, if that premises is to be the subject of refurb and / or strip out and refit is a new refurb/demo survey required?

Type 2 surveys were only ever 'management' surveys. If you wanted/ needed to carry out demolition/ refurbishment of a premises where asbestos is/ may be present then the requirement to have a demolition survey (old style type 3) remains the same. The demolition survey does not necessarily need to be for the entire premises - only for the area where refurbishment/ demolition is likely to take place (including any adjacent areas that may be affected).

Thanks for the fast responses. Am I right in understanding that even if the type 2 survey reported no asbestos found, there is now a requirement for a new survey when any works are to take place in the premises, say for instance a change of use of part of the premises where new plasterboard walls will be constructed and installation of plumbing, new electricals, suspended ceilings etc. What about a change of ownership but the same type of use following a shop going bust? There will be some works in re-branding etc. but not much intrusive construction work? I must say here that I carry PI insurance but not for asbestos so I am fishing for info to pass on to someone else who will pass it on to the client.
