Hi all, confused over the ratings of ladders and stepladders. For example a Class 3 (domestic grade) step ladder has a Duty Rating (on the label) of 15st, but charts indicate a Maximum Static Vertical Load of 19 1/2st. If an operative weighs 17st (mid-way) which figure do we use. Have read that the MSVL is the more realistic figure (man and his tools), the duty rating is outdated - not sure. Thanks in advance.

HI, the above was only used as an example (we dont actually use class 3 equipment). Need to differentiate between the lower figure quoted on the label and what is quoted in guidance - upper figure.

Looking at the above (many thanks frankc) - it would seem the two figures (quoted) are actually (in real, practical terms) - the same. Guidane on the label - stays (as indicated) as long as the upper figure isnt exceeded (man + tools).

Seems the lower figure is a computation only (BS); the upper figure is the key one to use.

Hi The Duty Rating (on the label) of 15st is the working rating for when the ladder is being used. The Maximum Static Vertical Load is the Max load the ladder is rated to. Therefore the duty rating is the on you should go by , effectively the working load . regards Dave

Arrrrrrrr!! So the upper figure (MSVL) can`t be exceeded (man and his tools / equipment) - potential failure. Lower figure is the SWL - within tolerance.
